Queen Mary PHD placement in SPACE MEDIALAB

Based at SPACE, SARA will be collaborating with ActiveArt on their Talking Quilt project, which is an intercultural and intergenerational eco-literacy arts project based at Spitalfields City Farm.

The project will take a snapshot of the farm at this moment in its history and interrogate what ‘community’ means to its workers, users, visitors, volunteers and new members. During workshops ActiveArt will be conducting oral history interviews with participants into the connection between community and food growing.

During the internship Sara's research will involve investigating the different ways these soundtracks can be embedded into the quilt and played back by audiences. Sara is interested in exploring different narrative aspects to the quilt, and creating prototypes to support interactive and collaborative storytelling. She is also interested in exploring haptic interactions with the fabric of the quilt using soft circuitry, and how this can affect the narrative.
